Day 13: Sat, Jun. 24
Jayden crashed on the pull-out couch, and Justin and Becca cozied up on the floor between the desk and record player. I was the first one up in the morning (at 7a), and after lying in bed for an hour reading, I finally got the party started with breakfast for them.
As Becca was getting ready, I think that's when I FaceTime'd with you on the deck while Jayden was on his scooter. Justin and I split a beer, and then we went to the Art Van baseball fields in Rockford.
Ashton ended up losing both games (thus no game on Sunday). We were all pretty in tune to their first game, which they only lost by 1 run. After, a couple of the cooler parents invited Justin and me to the Green Well in downtown Rockford (my recommendation) for a beer. Jayden stayed back because he was the Bat Boy, and Becca wasn't feeling well. On the short drive over, Justin broke out a little vape pen (with "cookies & cream"-flavored comedy tickets). I didn't think it tasted like dessert, but it worked.
Honestly, I had an awesome time with a couple of the parents, and one of their local friends. I only had 1 beer, they all had 2+, and then we hustled back to Ashton's 2nd game. They got lazy and sloppy, and lost bad.
After the game, Becca and the boys went back to the team's hotel at Crowne Plaza on 28th St (by Sundance, Cascade).
Justin and I went home, freshened up, and I took him out to dinner. We got really lucky when 2 spots at the bar at Butcher's Union opened up as soon as we walked in. I had another AMAZING meal—tri-tip (steak) with 2 sauces (cream and a brown), al dente potatoes (perfectly undercooked), and marinated red grapes. Honestly, buddy—this dish was fantastic.
Justin had a really sophisticated blueberry BBQ brisket dish. We split the meatballs as an app, and each had a bourbon cocktail. I think that dinner really meant a lot to him. It wasn't a meal he'd normally spring for, and when I told him it was "my treat," he instantly relaxed and I could tell he really enjoyed himself.
Then, we had a beer on Sovengard's patio before driving out to the hotel to pick up Becca and Jayden. I texted you a photo of the pool. FILLED WITH KIDS. They were having a blast, and honestly—it was the neatest party int town. The hotel allowed the parents to have their own coolers filled with beer on the huge patio, so they shared with us. We hung out for about an hour before coming home.
