Local Specialty Beverage Retail Location Doubles In Size

Local Specialty Beverage Retail Location Doubles In Size

Grand Rapids, MI – Known commonly by loyal, repeat customers simply as “Rishi’s,” Rishi’s International Beverage, a specialty beverage retail store located on the city’s southeast side, recently completed an impressive renovation, nearly doubling its size — just less than 3 years after opening.

Rishi Makkar [RISH-e mʌ-CAR – rhymes with “fishy”], opened his family’s business’ second, and largest, location in April 2014, at 3835 28th Street SE Grand Rapids, MI 49512. Since, in order to accommodate his patrons’ demand for the selection and availability of craft beer, wine and spirits that has evolved over the last 3 years, which Makkar calls “unprecedented,” he took the initiative to expand. Construction broke ground early this year, and concluded in October.

With the goal of offering personable, authentic hospitality and service with an unparalleled selection in a clutter-free environment, Makkar has reinvigorated his store with a new footprint of 13,000 sq ft, which includes a 3,300 sq ft refrigerated walk-in beer cave. Although Makkar is not intent on boasting the biggest selection in the area, a statistic he says can always be outdone, his expansive selection is worth noting nonetheless.

Makkar estimates that his shelf space can now house an inventory variety of 1,000 standard-format beers, 1500 large-format bottles of beer, 70 rotating 1⁄2 and 1⁄6-barrel kegs for immediate pick-up, 6,000 wines, and 2,000 spirits. In addition, Makkar built a second display counter that will be dedicated to in-store sampling, capable of accommodating multiple brands at a time.

In a new alcove, which used to display almost his entire craft beer selection, Makkar has plans to eventually build it out into a taproom and lounge. He has an application already submitted to the City for on-premise consumption. If approved, there will be a new, completely separate entrance for loyal guests to purchase and enjoy high-end spirits and wine, and exclusive, cellar-worthy limited craft beer.

To celebrate the renovation, Makkar will host a launch party on Tuesday, December 6, 2016, 4-7 p.m. Rishi’s International Beverage will have progressive samplings of craft beer, wine, and spirits, hors d’oeuvres, and a few other surprises available only to those who visit during the event.
